We are discussing Abraham, the Father of many nations.....
From the moment God gave me this assignment of finding and fulfilling purpose, the Holy Spirit has constantly showed me certain characteristics about the men and women of God who lived and fulfilled purpose and Abraham was one of the greatest of them all. We might argue that Enoch was, because he did not see corruption but; Abraham despite all, was called the friend of God.
Let's take a look at how the ministry of Abraham started... In the book of Genesis 6:3-7.
Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Gen 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
Gen 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Gen 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
Gen 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repents me that I have made them.
Because God delights in relationship, despite the wickedness of man God singled Noah out because Noah feared God. Through Noah another generation of men began. You can see that in the book of Genesis 10 and 11. In Genesis 12:1 God called Abraham to leave his kindred to a land which he promised to give him and his seed. Let's bear in mind that at this time Abraham was 75 years old and Sarah his wife was 65. But, through Abraham God was starting a new generation that will be known as God's own people(Israel). Abraham didn't know it at the time.
Someone might ask, why did God choose Abraham of all men whose wife was barren?
Even after Adam's fall God could have simply restored him or start a new generation through one of the sons of Adam. Let's look at the Genesis 18:19.
Gen 18:19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring on Abraham that which he has spoken of him.
Before God choses one for an assignment, he looks at the heart that's why God boldly declared that "I know Abraham, he will command not only his children but also his household to keep the way of the Lord and do justice and judgement". This is to say that God has seen the heart of the men before and after Abraham and knew that none of them were capable of keeping his commandment and teaching the generation after them to do same like Abraham would.
Wow.... Isa 43:1 But now thus said the LORD that created you, O Jacob, and he that formed you, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name; you are mine.
This scripture has become one of my favorite. God said I called you by your name, you are mine. God knows us individually and has assigned tasks to everyone of us base on who we are on the inside. That is to say no matter the personality we seem to portray on the outside, God knows us deeply. And when we come to God broken, God knows if we are truly broken or just making a show. And this is the reason why after Abraham lied to Pharoah that Sarah was his sister God still spoke to Pharoah in a dream because God truly knew the the heart of Abraham and why he lied. Let's remember that Abraham told this lie twice but these didn't change the mind of God because God knew him.
Abraham because of his faith in God became the Father of both the physical and spiritual Isrealites.
Acts 7:1 Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
Acts 7:2 And he said, Men, brothers, and fathers, listen; The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelled in Charran,
Acts 7:3 And said to him, Get you out of your country, and from your kindred, and come into the land which I shall show you.
Acts 7:4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelled in Charran: and from there, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein you now dwell.
Acts 7:5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
Wow... Just look again at the above scripture. Despite all Abraham believed God.
And through these generations from Abraham Jesus was born to world to die and redeem man from the curse of the law. What a purpose?
Let's look at Romans 4:18-25.
Rom 4:18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall your seed be.
Rom 4:19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:
Rom 4:20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
Rom 4:21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
Rom 4:22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
Rom 4:23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
Rom 4:24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
Rom 4:25 Who was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justification.
What is that task that God has assigned to you? God assigned that task to you because he knows you have the ability to fulfill that task. God knows you for he is the one that made you. So if you are giving excuses why you can not do this or that, the story of Abraham is written for you and I. Go back and study the scripture for yourself and see that Abraham was as human as you and I. He had his flaws but above all he loved God and trusted God. His faith and love for God was what brought about the fulfillment of God's word in his life and the benefits we are all enjoying today. So what are you waiting for?
